Square watermelons: thinking inside the box!

Today we gather to celebrate National Watermelon Day- held every year on August 3rd. Our friends at the National Watermelon Promotion Board actually blog about watermelon, so go ahead: get your fix here.

Recently I went on my first cruising vacation with my family and the food was just as amazing as everyone says. On our embarkation day, we headed up to the buffet and were greeted with an array of fantastic hand carved watermelon art and an ice sculpture!

In doing research for this post, I came across an amazing post about square watermelons- apparently Japanese farmers started to grow watermelons in boxes so that they will be square.

not genetically modified- just grown that way!

not genetically modified- just grown that way!

Why? Because square watermelons take up less space in 1)transport 2)grocery stores and 3)refrigerators, AND, for all these benefits, they can be sold at a premium price.

So cool- now that is thinking INSIDE the box!
